DT Vonnie Holliday is going to miss up to two weeks with a fractured ankle, which no doubt will move the Dolphins 32nd rush defense to negative numbers status in the coming weeks.
Remember when I used to tout former Louisville DT Amobi Okoye as our choice for the No. 9 pick in last April's draft?
This is why.
Remember when I wrote that one of our top priorities was to draft a DT because our current DTs are old?
This is why.
Remember how some of you agreed?
Cool.
Remember how some of you did not and sent me e-mails and told me I was over-reacting and panicking about the position? Some might remember how I was blasted on Salguero's blog for even suggesting we take a defensive player with our first pick. How dare I do that!
Well, some stats for you:
Okoye currently has 10 tackles and 4 sacks so far this season. Holliday has 11 tackles but only one sack.
The Houston Texans are ranked 13th in the NFL with 9 total team sacks (nearly half of them coming from Okoye). The Dolphins are ranked 27th with 5.
The Dolphins rank dead-last in rushing defense. The Texans rank 6th.
Now the Dolphins will be without Holliday for at least two weeks, if not more.
Okoye is 19 years old, durable, and will be in the defensive rookie of the year discussions at season's end.
He was also picked 10th overall, just after the Dolphins made their selection at 9.
