Rumor has it, the Dolphins like Michigan QB Chad Henne. And I mean like him as more than just a friend. Earlier this month ESPN's Todd McShay had the Fins taking Henne with their second pick. And, according to the Miami Herald, the Dolphins have told "at least two people" they like Henne and see little difference between him and Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan.
Who are these two people? Are they just two random people Dolphins officials ran into in an elevator or at church? Were they told at the same time or seperately? Was it a friendly chitchat? Maybe some guy, trying to break the ice at his wife's co-worker's baby shower with a couple of other guys standing next to the snack table asked one of them, "So.... what do you do?" And the guy answered, "I work with the Dolphins scouting department." And the other guy then said, "Hmm. So... which QB will Bill Parcells draft?" And the Dolphins guy answered, "Chad Henne." And the other guy said, "Cool. There are some major chicks at this shower, huh?" Ping! Miami Herald reports two people say the Dolphins like Chad Henne.
Frank Coyle, aside from being a total chick-magnet and ending his sentences abruptly, is an NFL Draft expert and says that Henne "Can make all the throws, has nice mechanics, is accurate, tough, smart.''
Some have compared Henne with Tom Brady. And yet some, like ESPN's Ron Jowarski, says Henne is merely the fourth best QB prospect in this class.
But the fact remains, the buzz is out there that Miami likes Henne. They sent two offensive staffers to work him out back in March, the day after they worked out Ryan. And they have not worked out or showed any interest in any of the other QBs like Joe Flacco or Brian Brohm.
So, we're left with the usual: trying our best to guess just what in the wide-wide world of sports Parcells is thinking. And we're left with stats. I personally believe John Beck is a damn fine player. But I also believe that the QB position is so fickle that, if you have a chance to draft a "potential franchise" QB every year, you do it. It's the one position you can never have enough of -- even when you have a ton of other needs to fill.
Personally, I'm not crazy about Henne. He has a big arm. But the rest of him makes me a little curious, and not in a gym shower kind of way. Henne had 47 starts in college and racked up a 59.7 completion rate. It's not terrible but it's not great either. This tells me he'll be a good QB but perhaps far from elite. There are other guys who, according to the stats, project to be better *cough*Brian Brohm*cough* NFL QBs (Brohm: 33 starts, 65.8 completion rate). But Henne does have a little Carson Palmer in him, so I kinda like that. Also, the Fins were offered a chance to work Brohm out but they declined. Assholes.
In the end, I'm still convinced that Parcells will draft a QB somewhere in this, er, draft. That doesn't mean he thinks Beck stinks. It just means that he doesn't want to hang his fortunes on going with the guy Cam Cameron drafted. I guess my point to all this is that I wish I knew what Parcells' thoughts are on the QB situation. I wish I was a magician like Criss Angel or something. But then all I would be able to do would be to chop Bill Parcells in half and watch as his legs ran away from his torso, and that really does us no good. So fuck it. I'll just have to wait and see like the rest of you.
