We’re just a week away from the NFL Draft and the Fins are in negotiations with Jake Long to make him the first overall pick. Or not.
With the draft eight days away, I would’ve liked to have presented you with my latest mock draft. But it’s largely unchanged. So I won’t. Not because I’m too lazy to draw up a new one – although, God knows I am – but because nothing has happened to change my mind. I still love Vernon Gholston but feel Chris Long is the safer pick at No. 1. I still love Brian Brohm and hope somehow he’ll be there at 32 and that we draft him instead of Chad Henne, who many have said Parcells likes. And I still think Parcells wants to build the defense first (Here’s the mock draft I did a few weeks ago).
Now you’d think that Jeff Ireland’s little verbal slip up yesterday is why I still think Chris Long is the guy. Hahaha….WRONG!
Here’s why my bloggy senses tell me it’ll be Howie’s kid: Parcells’ history.
Bill Parcells has a history of drafting defense with his first rounders and taking offensive tackles in the later rounds. In the 1996 draft, with the first pick, he passed the chance to take OT Jonathan Ogden. In the 1997 draft he passed up taking OT Orlando Pace and OT Tarik Glann and took linebacker James Farrior instead.
The main thing, of course, is how Parcells rates the other tackles in this draft. While many call it a deep class, Tuna may not agree. And there is a huge need for a franchise left tackle in Miami. Bookend a guy with J-Long’s potential with RT Vernon Carey, and our O-line's suddenly looking like Jessica Alba’s ass pre-pregnancy (i.e.: tight!).
But you know what? What does it matter, really? Bill Parcells is running the show now. And that’s a vast improvement from the shit throwing monkeys who ran things down here in the past. Parcells can set himself and Jeff Ireland on fire next Saturday and it will still be the best draft day we’ve seen here in decades.
